Sports & Leisure Centre

On 28 May 2020 Sandwich Technology School became the new owners of Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre and launched a fundraising campaign to support essential repairs. The Sports Hall floor had deteriorated to a point where it was no longer safe to use and we were keen to reinstate the facilities – not just for our students, but for the community too. Thanks to your kind donations and our investment we are making great progress!

The school is now working hard, in partnership with Freedom Leisure, to ensure:

  • the Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre remains open to the public;
  • the building continues to provide a service for the local community;
  • the continual improvement to the facilities the sports center is providing, with a current focus on improving the changing facilities.

There are going to be some substantial costs involved – in May 2020, when ownership was transferred, the building had about £250,000 worth of issues that needed to be addressed.  The school has invested a £100,000 to ensure the students are provided with high quality failities for their PE curriculum and Freedom Leisure is similarly determined to make the Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre a going concern.  However, the school has limited resources and Freedom Leisure is a not-for-profit company that, like many other businesses, has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

We are, therefore, asking for your help.  If every member of our school community were able to spare £10, that would bring in over £15,000 towards the cause.  If residents of Sandwich and other parts of the local community helped too, who knows how much we could raise?  Every penny would help to ensure that this valuable community asset is preserved for the good of everyone.  If you are willing and able to help, please visit our Just Giving page and encourage others to do the same:

You could also help by taking out membership at the Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre and, of course, getting fit at the same time.  Or, if you have any sporting teams or clubs that are looking for a venue to exercise in, please consider using the Centre at very reasonable rates.  Information on how to do this can be found here:

As a further string to our fundraising bow, we have launched a Dover District Lotto page. Every ticket sold will benefit our own fundraising as well as other local causes—and for every £1 ticket you have a chance to win £25,000. (Definitely a win-win situation!) It’s essential that your tickets are bought via the STS page in order for us to benefit—the following link will take you to it:

The school and our community will be enormously grateful for any help that you can give.  We are determined to ensure that Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre stays at the heart of both the school and the local community and, with your help, I am confident that we can do it.

With best wishes
