Title of the qualification achieved at the end of the course

GCSE Geography (AQA)

What will you learn/How will you be taught?

Geography is a universally relevant, hands on subject that helps students to make sense of the world around them.

At STS students will follow the new AQA (9-1) specification.  This course builds upon content at Key Stage 3 and consists of a variety of physical and human topics.  In physical geography, students investigate the processes that shape the Earth's surface: topics such as natural hazards, physical landscapes of the UK and the living world are studied.  In human geography, students look at the interrelationships between people, place and environment, studying topics such as urban issues and challenges, the changing economic world and resource management.  Although there is no coursework component, all students will take part in several fieldwork activities.  At the end of the course students will sit three examinations that will assess their knowledge and understanding of the content and the application of the skills that they have learnt, including those experienced in their fieldwork.

Studying GCSE Geography at STS deepens a student’s understanding of geographical processes, the impact people have on the environment, and the challenge of sustainable development.  Students develop their ability to use a wide range of geographical investigative techniques and approaches.  At the end of the course students are able to demonstrate a wide range of skills including statistical skills, ICT skills (including Geographic Information System), and graphical skills. Our Geography course enables students to become globally and environmentally informed and thoughtful, enquiring citizens.
